Tennessee's 2009 National History Day Award Winners Bring History to Life

East Tennessee Historical Society Curator of Education Lisa Oakley will open with a brief overview of National History Day and how ETHS works with schools, teachers and students on this annual competition.  She will then introduce four of our award winning Tennessee students selected at the National History Day competition held at the University of Maryland College Park Campus in the Washington, D.C. area in June 2009.  The students will give an overview of their project and show a portion of their winning documentaries, both of which focus on East Tennesseans.  The students presenting are:

Hannah Clevenger, a 9th grader from Gatlinburg Pittman High School whose video documentary was selected at nationals as Tennessee Outstanding Entry for Senior Division.  Hannah, whose teacher is Rebecca Byrd, advanced to national after placing first in her category at the district competition in Knoxville and first again at the state competition held in April.

Her documentary is entitled "Evelyn Bishop: Crafting a Legacy in the Tennessee Mountains" and is about Bishop's work as Head Resident of the Pi Beta Phi Settlement School in Gatlinburg from 1918 to 1933.

Maranda & Elisa Vandergriff from Powell and Elijah Gray from Sevier County will also present their award winning project.  They placed second of the top three awards in the National History Day's Junior Group Documentary division for their work entitled "Dr. Robert F. Thomas:  The Great Smoky Mountains Horseback Healer of Body and Soul."  Dr. Thomas was a Sevier County physician and missionary who arrived in the 1920's and remained in the mountains of East Tennessee for 60 years providing health care and service to the people there.

The students, who are home schooled by Katie Vandergriff and Sabrina Gray, advanced to the national competition by placing first at the ETHS district competition and first again at the Tennessee Historical Society's state competition, held in Nashville this past April.   The project competed against 100 projects from around the country competing in the nationals and to be selected for the final round of 14 vying for the top three awards.

About National History Day

More than just a day, NHD allows participating students to choose their own topics of study and research from original sources based on a yearly theme.  This year's theme was The Individual in History: Actions and Legacies.  They present their work in a variety of ways by creating museum-type exhibits, video documentaries, original performances, interpretive websites, or traditional research papers.  The East Tennessee Historical Society and University of Tennessee Department annually co-sponsor the East Tennessee district competition for all of East Tennessee except seven Southeast counties.
